Additional Information | Lowell was commissioned First Lieutenant in the 20th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteers in July 1861. He was shot in the thigh at the battle of Ball's Bluff on 21 October 1861, possibly why he required the crutches seen in this photograph. He received a mortal wound at the Battle of Glendale on 30 June 1862 and died at Nelson's Farm, Virginia on 4 July 1862.
