Sorich I have duly received, and observe with the greatest statisfaction and gratitude your continued exertions and good offices in my favor, for which myself, family and nation, must ever [inserted: feel &] pay you the homage of our eternal thanks, and I shall take care to pourtray [sic] to your government in America, your generous kindness towards me, with that warmth of friendship and gratifulness [sic] which you so justly merit. I have conceived that more strongly to cement the good understanding you have brought about between my brother and myself, and to evidence to him the full confidence his generosity towards me has excited, to expedite my son the bearer hereof to Tripoli to pay his highness personally my thanks and to assure him of my most firm attachment. During his stay at Tripoli I pray your good counsels and civilities towards him, placing him in your hands as your own child. The three months arrears I have not yet received from Mr. Barker; would it be convenient for you to order Mr. Higgens to make the disbursement to me, as such sum would be of much convenience to me at this moment. My brother has written to Schembri to become responsible for my debts, depending upon any making remittances for their liquidation within a certain period after my- [2] my [sic] establishment at Derna. His wishes shall be complied with not only in this but in every other respect, and as you have advised me to act in this, as well as in all other transactions with my brother with perfect sincerity, I think it best to apprize you, that circumstances may render it difficult to to [sic] expedite effects to satisfy those claims with that promptness which may be expected from me. I give however my sacred promise that, with all possible celerity after my arrival, I will not fail to transmit all that can be spared from my necessities for that object. I feel myself also much obliged for the election my brother and yourself have been pleased to make of your envoy My.
