Transcript	Show/hide Private - Hermitage February 27,,th 1843 - My dear Sir, Having been requested by letters from the city of Washington to address Genl St Anna, president of Mexico, on the subject of the prisoners lately captured by the Mexican Genl at Mier, under Col Tisher commanding the Texanes – the friends of the Texan prisoners in the United States being apprehensive that Genl St Anna – will not adhere to the capitulation entered into by Col Tisher, to treat them as prisoners of war, but will treat them as rebels & destroy them I have undertaken this delicate task, as I think St Anna, has too much wisdom, [struck: as] not to treat these men as prisoners of war, as any other course would arouse the whole civilised world against such barbarity – I have taken the liberty to enclose the letter under cover to you, that you may place it in the hands of the Mexican consul at New Orleans as the safest channel to reach Genl St. Anna – With sincere respects yr friend – James.
