Content Description | Johnson informs his brother of his recent election to the United States Senate for a six year term beginning 4 March 1861. Relays the proceedings, telling how a resolution was passed requesting Johnson to address the two Houses, which he states as giving "general satisfaction." Says his name was placed in nomination and he was elected with 81 votes. Johnson was later expelled from the Senate (10 January 1862) for his sympathy and participation in the rebellion against the United States. |
