From Archive Folder The massacre of Chehaw Indians by Georgia militia
Title Andrew Jackson to John M. Davis regarding the Chehaw affair
Date 7 May 1818
Author Jackson, Andrew (1767-1845)
Recipient Davis, John M.
Document Type Correspondence; Military document
Content Description A clerical copy of Jackson's letter to Davis in which he deals with aftermath of the Chehaw Affair. Orders Davis to send a "talk to Kinnard with instructions to explain the substance to the Chehaw Warriors." Also orders him to arrest Obediah Wright for murdering several female and elderly Chehaw Indians. If Davis is unable to locate Wright, he is instructed to obtain assistance from the governor of Georgia. A note written on the interior leaf by James Gadsden, then serving under Jackson, indicates that this copy was for the Secretary of War John C. Calhoun and that it should be sent with a copy of Thomas Glascock's letter (see GLC00782.11.03) and the talk to the Chehaw mentioned here. The Chehaw were allied with the Americans in the first Seminole War.
