From Archive Folder | The Henry Knox Papers [0078] September-December 1786 |
Title | Excerpt from a letter regarding military appointments |
Date | 2 December 1786 |
Author | Freeman, Constant (1757-1824) |
Additional authors | Moore, William (1752-1819) |
Document Type | Military document; Correspondence |
Content Description | The author writes, "That you are not yet appointed need not surprise you when you have read this- I came here fully of opinion that I should have the second [Company] of [Artillery]; that you and all the other officers recommended by General Knox would be commissioned, but what a reverse! for some reason which I have not been able to learn, the company which I expected was given to Cap. [Henry] Burbeck, and as they could not decently pass by me the Governor has given me a Company of Infantry 'tho I am disappointed, still I had rather have the [Company] of Infantry as far as respects rank, for certainly I have a greater prospect of promotion now than I ever had. - I am also very much flatter'd by the pleasure it has given the Officers in general. As far as my Interest here can be of service to you, you may depend on its being exerted- There will be no more appointments made 'till the 20th Instant unless Mr. Shays should oblige the council to be call'd sooner." Written in the hand of William Moore (refer to GLC02437.03373). |
