See Malone, Sage of Monticello, p. 374n, who cites the 1819 budget. In 1819 the University's Bursar calculated actual needs at an additional $80,000 for salaries and finishing buildings, but the Legislature only allowed the Board of Visitors to borrow up to $60,000; Ibid., pp. 374, 375. Malone does not seem to have been aware of this document. |
