Date 1811-1848
Author McCarthy, Charles (d. 1824)
Document Type Book
Content Description Documents issued in Sierra Leone, many dealing with slavery. Bound by Colonial Office Library (possibly the Colonial Office Library of London). Contains a brief and incomplete handwritten table of contents. An exhaustive compilation of documents related to the British rule of Sierra Leone 1811-1848. First act possibly docketed by Charles McCarthy, Governor of Sierra Leone 1814-1824, 11 November 1815. Contains documents related to McCarthy's rule in Sierra Leone and several newspaper clippings from 1822 and 1823, pertaining to McCarthy. Includes a variety of treaties between the British and local rulers of Sierra Leone, proclamations regarding trade, and acts pertaining to laws and life in the colony. Also includes proclamations persecuting slave traders in the colony. Some proclamations indicate Kenneth Macaulay as Acting Governor of Sierra Leone in 1821. Some acts relate to the sale of spirits and the ownership of land within the colony. Subject matter extends into the reign of Queen Victoria. During this period, many acts appear to attempt to regulate crime ("Larcenies, affrays and other Offences"), and to impose regular levy of fines. Moreover, contains proclamations issued by the British government encouraging African emigration to the West Indies, and promises that the Africans will remain free upon their arrival in Jamaica, Trinidad, and other colonies. Many acts appear to be docketed with ink. Related to Governors Richard Doherty (1837-1840), John Jeremie (1840-1841), William Fergusson (1841-1842), and others. Accompanied by GLC 8059.02, a bill of exchange signed by McCarthy, pertaining to captured slaves in Sierra Leone.
