"His Excellency the Bashaw [of Tripoli] is perfectly satisfied with your election of Morocco for your future residence." Davis also addresses Caramanli's desire to reign in Derna: "the present Bey of Derna was unwell and would actually leave the province in the course of forty days, and that as the country could not be left without a government it was necessary that some person should be sent within two months." Davis is introducing an American legation to discuss this option with the ex-Bashaw. Scribal copy bound together with GLC 2794.118, .120-.124, .128-.133, .135-.145 and .147-.151. George Davis, Consul of the U.S. of America for the Regency of Tripoli To His Excellency Ahmet Bashaw Caramanli. - I had the Honor to receive some days since Your Excellency's letter of the 10. and 11. Instant, announcing your final determination to repair to DMoracco, acknowledging the receipt of $200 from William Higgens, Esq: (the amount of your allowance for the month of January) and enclosing an abstract of your debts amounting to one thousand and one hundred and ten Dollars. His Excellency the Bashaw is perfectly satisfied with your election of Morocco for your future residence, and will charge you with such letters to the Emperor as cannot fail to ensure you the respect and attention due to your rank. He has also promised to make a suitable provision for the liquidation of your debts. These testimonies of friendship I persuade myself will sufficiently corrolate the assurances I have given of His Excellency's favorable disposition towards you, and will have their just influences in fixing Your Excellency's determination in regard to the advantageous proposals made you in my letter of the 15. Instant. Recalling the subject to the Bashaw's attention on a recent occasion, he informed me that the present Bey of Derna was unwell and would actually leave the province in the course of forty days, and that as the - [2] the [sic] country could not be left without a government it was necessary that some person should be sent within two months. Under the honest impression that I was consulting your dearest interests I proposed that the Secretary of this legation should repair to Malta for the purpose of conferring with your Excellency; and as his public situation entitles him to my entire confidence Your Excellency will treat with him in the same manner as tho' I were present in person, and whatever he may state you may consider as being confirmed by myself. At my earliest request His Excellency has written you a letter with which Mr. Payne is also charged, but which he is instructed to deliver only in the event of your determination to repair to Derna.
