Content Description | Account book for the Winn family's Hardware plantation. Lists debits and credits, sales and purchases of supplies, tools and produce. Lists sales of tobacco, prices of other crops, amount of tobacco produced by each slave, and wages. One page has a short contract with William A. Clements for his services as overseer; it is signed by Winn and Clements. Several pages, with headings such as "Memo of Negroes Tobacco Made"; "Balance due Negroes for Tobacco," "Sold Negroes Tobacco," and "Tobacco Made by My Negroes," "Weights of the Negroes Tobacco Made," show annual monetary transactions between Winn and, evidently, his slaves. The slaves are listed by name ("Phebe," "Dumb Tom," "Deaf Tom," Old George, etc.), and the weights of tobacco and/or dollar values of the tobacco transactions are listed by each name. |
