[draft] Westpoint 5th Sept.r 1782. Dear Sir I have received your favor of yesterday, requesting that the officer from the 2d Connecticut regiment maybe permitted to collect and bring with him to camp the [illegible] guards and fatigues from that regiment [struck: from that regiment] still remaining at [struck: at West Point] and in the vicinity of West Point. All the Guards which had been reported to me from that line, on [struck: West Point] [inserted: West point Constitution Island & Newbury] and the [strikeout] were released in consequence of your former request. The fatigue parties [inserted: on the front] under Major Villefranche and Captain Buchannan will be relieved, - But you know too well the strength of the Garrison to suppose that it is possible to relieve the other guards and fatigue parties specified by Colonel Swift. - The detail of the Guards and appropriations of the Corps here, and [struck: those requested] [inserted: the parties & guards requested to be relieved] by Colonel Swift are enclosed. I am not ambitious of a [inserted: large] command, [struck: are] apprehensive of our enemy or unwilling to obey orders, but it is impossible to send reliefs to the places where Colonel Swift now has the guards.
