Content Description Written by Knox as Secretary of War to Livingston, an Albany merchant. References Livingston's letter of 31 May. Encloses a bill for 36 dollars to pay Lieutenant Foy the Collector. Says he does not have a copy of the receipt "annexed to Mr. Duer." (Knox owed money to Livingston for a house rental.) Is not sure if it has been refused. Apologizes and says he did not mean to offend.

Additional Information Walter Livingston (November 27, 1740– May 14, 1797) was an American merchant from Albany. Elected delegate to the provincial convention held in New York in April and May 1775; member of the First Provincial Congress from May to November 1775; judge of Albany County in 1774 and 1775; served as commissary of stores and provisions for the department of New York from July 17, 1775, until September 7, 1776, when he resigned; deputy commissary general of the northern department in 1775 and 1776; member of the State assembly 1777-1779 and served as speaker in 1778; member of the New York and Massachusetts Boundary Commission in 1784; a member of the board of regents of the University of the State of New York 1784-1787; Member of the Continental Congress in 1784 and 1785; appointed Commissioner of the United States Treasury in 1785.
