Content Description | Sand-cast iron jews harp; the harp has a U-shaped bow fashioned to resemble a miniature horseshoe, one side is flat with eight small rectangular depressions (four per side) and two bumps at the top end, the opposite side has two opposing bevels forming a continuous ridge at the center, the bow measures 1 3/8" wide, cast atop both arms on the horseshoe is a J-shaped tapered prong 1 7/16" long; mounted vertically down the center of the bow and in between the prongs is a spring ("tongue") made of thin flat iron which is tapered and curved at the top; the harp measures 2 3/4" long overall, maker unknown; the beveled side of the bow and spring have some light to medium pitting; jews harps was excavated from a Civil War campsite near Winchester, VA. |
