Additional Information | Nicolay was President Abraham Lincoln's private secretary, a diplomat, and a Marshall of the U.S. Supreme Court. He wrote the book, Abraham Lincoln: A History, with John Hay. Smith was a widely known philanthropist and social reformer who ran for President in 1848. He used some of his money to set up communities of freed black slaves. |
