Content Description | No. I and II cover the record of the blockade ship Isonomia from the beginning of its service off Wilmington SC in August 1864 to 25 December 1864 when Simpson released command of the vessel. Calf covers. [24 November] "…a seaman by the name of Wallace must have left the ship with the intention of deserting by swimming to one of the Keys. His pants and shoes were found n deck, and he had sold a lot of mess stores, that he had purchased from the "Union," a few days ago. Searched for him today, but could find no trace of him. Sent a boat to search sponging sloop in the neighborhood, but without success. They say on board the sloop that no man could have come ashore last night, that he would have been eaten by sharks before reaching the shore, or else would have been killed on the coral racks in trying to land. There is every reason to suppose that this man Wallace has met his death in his effort to desert." [28 November] "heard of Lincoln's election for a second term! o tempora, o mores!" [12 December] "Sat on Court Martial of Corn[elius]Collins for striking an officer, & sentenced him to death with recommendation to mercy on account of Epilepsy." [16 December] "Read message of the President" [Lincoln gave State of the Union speech on 6 December]. [Additional excerpts available.] |
