Although the month of the letter is not known, the letter was likely written on August 22nd, 1864 based on what is known about Hammond's whereabouts during the war and that of the 189th New York. Hopes letter finds her in good health and good spirits. Talks of joining a regiment and going to Elmiru [Elmira]. Consoles her, reminding her that he would only be gone for a little while. With the new regiment, he will get to go to Harpers Ferry. Will send home money from his pay as soon as he can. Not much to write about. Richard Collins will "be up on Saturday," so she should get him three pigs. Comforts her, telling her to "keep good courage." |
