The collection reveals less about the war than the trials of two newlyweds. The collection consists of 32 prewar letters (1823-61); 43 wartime letters, the majority of which are written by Jones to his wife (1862-65); and 16 postwar letters. Dr. Jones (1839-1920) served as a Lieutenant in the 3rd Tennessee Regiment, Co. H. He was captured at Fort Donelson, sent to Camp Chase, whence he escaped, and rejoined the army as a surgeon in the 27th Tennessee Regiment. Nothing extant survives about Donelson or his capture. |
