Date | 16 February 1793 |
Author | Knox, Henry (1750-1806) |
Document Type | Government document; Land transaction document |
Content Description | Later copy. A set of notes made in 1848 from the original instructions from Knox to commissioners negotiating a treaty with the Northwestern Indians (see GLC02437.05823). The top of page one is marked "1848" in a different hand. The commissioners are to be knowledgeable on previous treaties with the Indians, especially the 1789 treaty signed at Fort Harmar. There is a concern that the Indian tribes will come forward with new claims. Expresses a desire to be "liberal in granting additional considerations." If the tribes do not like the boundaries, the commissioners are to find out what the Indians think is fair. Those boundaries will need to be sent to the president and the Senate for final approval. Would like the commissioners to get a 3-7 year truce. If the Indians sell any of the land given to them through the treaty, the U.S. claims the right of preemption. |
