Additional Information | Benjamin Franklin Butler (1818-1893) was a controversial Union general who led the forces occupying New Orleans. After the war, her served as a United States Congressman from Massachusetts, and worked with Charles Sumner on the Civil Rights Act of 1875, guaranteeing African American rights. He also helped enact the Civil Rights Act of 1871, which legislated against the Ku Klux Klan. After his tenure as a Congressman, he served as Governor of Massachusetts. |
