Content Description Docketed by Williams. Countersigned by Eleazer Wales and by Jedediah Huntington. Order to pay colonel William Williams seven pounds seven schillings, with tax of one penny per pound, and "charge the state." From the "Pay Table Office" Signed by Finn Wadsworth and Eleazer Wales as the committee, and across their names Jedediah Huntington has signed. To John Lawrence as treasurer. Verso signed by Williams stating he received the contents. William Williams was a signer of the Declaration of Independence and a Representative from Connecticut. He was a colonel in the Connecticut militia, but resigned to serve in Congress. However, on 6 September 1781 he raced twenty three miles to New London to help stop an attack by Benedict Arnold. This army pay stub most likely is in relation to that event, since it seems to be his only military service after his resignation in 1776.
