Title Permission for Lewis Nicola to move lumber from Fishkill to West Point
Date 5 October 1782
Author Shaw, Samuel (1754-1794)
Recipient Nicola, Lewis
Document Type Military document
Content Description Writes, "Col. [Lewis] Nicola, of the Invalids, is hereby authorized to take down & move from Fishkill such of the useless and unoccupied barracks at that place, as he shall judge necessary, for furnishing him with quarters at this post during the ensuing winter. By order of Gen. [Henry] Knox." Nicola was needed at West Point but could not go until a house big enough for his large "family" was built; though the house was promised, lack of materials and manpower stalled construction until Nicola suggested he bring lumber from Fishkill (see GLC02437.01639).
