Title | Philip Spencer to Robert Livingston regarding a rumor of abuse of iron workers |
Date | 11 August 1766 |
Author | Spencer, Philip (1724-1815) |
Document Type | Correspondence |
Content Description | Spencer writes that a dreadful rumor has been spread about Robert, Jr., claiming that he refused to pay his iron workers with money, and insisted that they accept goods as payment. When the workers declined to accept goods, he forced them into confinement for several hours and treated them with much abuse. According to Spencer, this has severely damaged Robert Livingston's reputation, and caused most of the iron workers to leave their jobs at Salisbury ore hill. Docketed on address leaf. |
