Additional Information Banks was a merchant from Fredericksburg, Virginia. Part of his business dealings included providing clothing for the American army prior to the evacuation of the British. As Banks had a reputation for "shady" dealings, it came as no surprise to many when a private letter to his partner in Virginia, which was opened and made public, revealed that Banks was planning to trade tobacco with the enemy, and had obtained access to and egress from enemy-held Charleston through dubious means.
