Content Description | Polk's refusal to furnish correspondence between Minister Plenipotentiary of Mexico Slidell and himself on the grounds that the orders contained therein relate to negotiations that are ongoing. Polk does include reports from the Secretaries of War, State, and the Navy regarding the return of Presidents Antonio Lopéz de Santa Anna and Mariano Paredes y Arrillaga to Mexico. References George Washington's precedent in refusing to comply with an order from Congress regarding correspondence surrounding a treaty with Great Britain. |
