Additional Information Lt. John Smith (later General Sir John Smith) had served in Canada before being captured in 1775 at St. John's by Benedict Arnold's army. He was exchanged in 1777, and went on to fight at Brandywine, Germantown, Charlestown, and Yorktown. Smith later served in the West Indies under Ralph Abercromby (1795), in Holland under the Duke of York (1799), and at Gibraltar (1804-14), where he ended his tenure as governor. At the time of his death, Smith held the rank of colonel commandant. (See "History of the Royal Regiment of Artillery," J. Murray, 1872.)
