Additional Information Cleaveland was appointed Brigadier General of Connecticut militia in 1796. Also in 1796, the Connecticut land company appointed Cleaveland as a superintendent surveyor of the company's territory in northeastern Ohio. Cleveland, Ohio is named after Moses.
