Title Richard Graham to William Clark reporting that the Osage Indians sent a war party against the Pawnee and returned with 120 horses and 22 scalps [draft]
Date 31 May 1823
Author Graham, Richard (1786-1858)
Recipient Clark, William
Document Type Correspondence; Government document
Content Description Discusses the transport of a horse thief named James Dunlap (aka John Ramey). Indicates that he expects the Osage Indians on their new land (Marias des Cygne, Kansas) in a few days and their corn is not yet planted; comments on the problems of food scarcity. Tells how he had a "'swimming' time" coming up because of canoe problems. In a postscript, reports that the Osage sent a war party against the Pawnee and returned with 120 horses and 22 scalps, only four coming from warriors. Docketed by Graham, who indicates that this is "A copy of a letter to Gen. Clark..." Several alterations indicate that this was possibly a draft.
