[?], 29th May 1853 My Dear Friend, Sometime since, I wrote a pretty long letter, to our Friend Lawrence, to let him know that I would sometimes pay my [better?] debts. I [sent] the [?] to Judge [?], and he since, told me, that he had written a long letter in answer to it. I [get] our Friend Banks "[Reporten]" and read it. What [licks], he has given to Pierce, [?]. I pity them; but all that I can say, is, "good enough for them" as an Irish said of an unfortunate friend of his. I have been at Court on business, and half my time since my return home. And in a few days, if spared, I will be off again, for fifteen days, so you see "there is no rest for the wicked." I received many letters, political, and [?]. The latter I answered when I can, the former not at all. [?] Shankland has fallen out with me, and has been playing the Dog. Get the Post, or the Sun, or Herald to ask, "if a new [Edition] of of [sic] the Donaldson correspondence is to be forth coming in the approaching Canvass," and a Query, as to the author. It would be well to do it. I am in a good [?] in his way, so long as his way is strait and that depends of his moral pervensitions!!! This is [?] enough to waste and [?]. The [sear?shire] has been and is most [?] to to [sic] [?]. The draught has been great, and to day, I learn that the [army/enemy] [w?] has attacked our corn fields; [tho], the cotton has not yet been [m?ed] by it.
