Content Description | Signed by Bachelder on the first blank page, "Jon. B Bachelder, Print Publisher, no. 123 Washington St. Boston." Drawings, pencil and watercolor sketches, and notes on the Gettysburg campaign. Includes sketches of Hanover Junction, PA, 11 July 1863; Rock Ridge Devil's Den Round Top, 23 July 1863; Gen. Meade's Headquarters, 19 August 1863; and Fair Oaks, 31 May 1862, but possibly drawn later. Other sketches include houses, fields, and the road into Gettysburg. 11 drawings total, many blank pages, some pages removed. Bound in black book marked "Sketch Book." |

Additional Information | Bachelder was an artist, historian, and printmaker fascinated with the Battle of Gettysburg. He was selected by Congress to be the battle's official historian. Bachelder enlisted in the 3rd Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Artillery, Company A on 2 December 1863 as a cooper. He mustered out 18 September 1865 as an Artificer. |
