Content Description | Letterbook of Major Conyers, commander of the mounted Detachment from 1st Regiment Missouri Volunteers during the Black Hawk War. This bound volume contains orders, memoranda, incoming and outgoing correspondence, company appraisements and accounts. Records communications from Indian agent Hughes on Platte regarding Keokuk and fur trader and Indian agent Joshua Pilcher on regarding Chief Black Hawk. Also provides details of Iowa scouting expeditions from Fort Pike on the Des Moines River and from Fort Madison. The first leaves and pastedowns contain notes from the early 1840s, possibly in another hand. |
