Title | Theodore Roosevelt to James D. Fox about the removal of friars in the Philippines |
Date | 21 July 1902 |
Author | Roosevelt, Theodore (1858-1919) |
Recipient | Fox, James D. (fl. 1902) |
Document Type | Correspondence |
Content Description | Thanks him for his letter and writes, "I have received your letter in reference to the friars; and as it evidently proceeds from an entire misunderstanding of the facts, I take pleasure in reciting them to you." Fox was a member of the Holy Name Society, Church of St. Catherine of Siena, New York, who in mid July had sent resolutions of his society to Roosevelt protesting the banishment of friars from the Philippines. Roosevelt notes that the friars were removed by the Philippine people, not the United States government, and the government of the United States is acting benevolently in involving itself in the sale of the lands formerly in the possession of the friars. Aguinaldo would have just seized the lands. Written as President of the United States on White House stationery. |
