Content Description | President Jefferson, writing shortly after his last Christmas in the White House, acknowledges receipt of the gift of some botanical specimens and drawings from the pen of Miss Crownenshield. Bentley (1759-1819) was a Unitarian Minister in Salem, Mass. and liberal Jeffersonian. Jefferson refers in the letter to members of the celebrated Crownenshield family of Salem. Jefferson's friend and Secretary of Navy, Jacob Crownenshield had died earlier in the year. |
